Social Media flares up over ‘discrimination’ against Hima Das

No doubt, PV Sindhu and Hima Das are the gems of our nation as both have bagged several medals in the International events. Das may have scripted history by winning 6 gold medal in a month at a global event, but she is also in the news for all the wrong reasons. First, social media was inundated with people searching for her caste background. This fueled a counter movement of sorts, with shocked netizens calling out all those overly inquisitive about Hima’s caste details. Now, netizens are wondering what Hima’s achievement means for her bank balance. For now however, no monetary value has been attached to Hima’s spectacular feat, much to the chagrin of netizens. Likewise, when shuttler P V Sindhu made her presence felt on the international sports arena, she was inundated with lucrative deals, which made her the seventh highest paid woman sportsperson in the world. According to a Twitter user, Sindhu, who have won the bronze medal, got Rs 4 crore from the Haryana government, Rs 2 crore from the Delhi government, land and flat worth crores from the Telengana government, Rs 50 lakh from the Madhya Pradesh government and Rs 50 lakh, along with a BMW car from the Badminton Society. While on the other hand, Hima Das, who went down in history by winning 6 gold medals in a month, got just Rs 50,000 from the Union government and Rs 1 lakh from the Assam government.
