Village in Sonipat bans girls from wearing jeans, carrying mobile phones Ishapur Kheri, a village in Sonepat district of Haryana has barred girls from using mobile phones and wearing jeans, as the villagers fear that it “makes them elope with boys”. The village has about 5000 residents. The sarpanch of the village, Prem Singh, had issued this diktat a couple of months ago during a panchayat but he as well as other village heads have got active now. “We have schools up to 12th standard in our own village for girls. After that, the girls have to go to Sonepat for higher studies. Three college-going girls from the village had eloped with boys two years ago against their family’s wishes, bringing bad name to the entire village. The girls in question used to keep mobile phones and wear jeans,” the sarpanch said. He adds that when the girls use mobile phones, they get in touch with boys and make plans to run away with them and by wearing jeans, the girls attract unnecessary attention of boys. Dr Reicha Tanwar, professor and former director of the Women’s Studies Research Centre, Kurukshetra University, however, finds the panchayat’s diktat shocking. “I am shocked and ashamed to be from Haryana because everyday when I open the newspaper I find new stories of violence against women and girls which is gory and numbs one’s mind. Rather than tackling the problem from the root we have civil society groups trying to blame the girls for this state of affairs,” she said. “When the mindset of our society is such that people do not feel the guilt even in killing their daughters, we cannot expect anything better.” Tanwar added. Preeti Bhardwaj, vice chairperson of the state’s Women’s Commission said, “It is wrong to say that if a girl wears jeans or keeps a mobile phone, she will elope with someone. If social media has its adverse effects, it is on boys as well as girls both,” she added. -PTC News-
