Sports ministry sends all-woman players’ list for Padma awards 2019

The Sports Ministry, on Thursday, sent its first ever all-woman list of recommendations for Padma Awards, 2019. Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom has been nominated for Padma Vibhushan, while ace shuttler PV Sindhu has been nominated for Padma Bhushan, said a Times of India report. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Table Tennis player Manika Batra, cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, hockey captain Rani Rampal, former shooter Suma Shirur and twin mountaineer sisters Tashi and Nungshi Malik have been nominated for Padma Shri awards. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1172051262914719744 The Manipur boxer is the only woman to become World Boxing champion for a record six times and the only woman boxer to win a medal in each of the seven world championships. She became the first woman athlete to be nominated for the Padma Vibhushan award, the county’s highest civilian honor after Bharat Ratna. Also, the 36-year-old Mary Kom will become the fourth sports personality to get the Padma Vibhushan after Chess mastermind Vishwanathan Anand in 2007, Master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar in 2008 and mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary in 2008. Mary received the Padma Bhushan in 2013 and Padma Shri in 2006. Meanwhile, PV Sindhu did the nation proud by winning the maiden BWF World Championships in August.
