PTC Web Desk: India has officially won the bid to host the historic 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad confirmed as the venue. The announcement came after representatives from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories backed India’s proposal during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow. This will be India’s first major global multi-sport event since hosting the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.

India’s bid showcased Ahmedabad, popularly known as Amdavad, as a dynamic, future-ready metropolis capable of delivering a memorable 100-year celebration of the Games. Building on the momentum anticipated after Glasgow 2026, India emphasised its growing sports infrastructure, youthful demographic and rich cultural identity with global appeal.

Moments after the decision, the General Assembly Hall erupted in a vibrant display of Indian culture. A troupe of 20 Garba dancers and 30 dhol drummers, featuring performers from Glasgow’s Indian community and other Commonwealth regions, took over the stage, offering a lively glimpse into the cultural spirit Gujarat visitors can expect in 2030.

Commonwealth Sport president Dr Donald Rukare described the decision as a defining moment for the Games. Calling it “the beginning of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport,” he said the transition from Glasgow 2026 to Amdavad 2030 lays a strong foundation for the next century of the event. He applauded India for its “scale, ambition, youthful energy, cultural richness, and deep sporting enthusiasm,” also noting that several countries have already expressed interest in hosting events beyond 2034.

The Centenary Games are expected to feature between 15 and 17 sporting disciplines. The Amdavad 2030 Organising Committee will work closely with Commonwealth Sport and international federations to develop an exciting and globally appealing sports programme. The selection process begins next month, with the final list set to be announced next year.

First held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, the Commonwealth Games will reach a historic milestone with the 2030 Centenary Edition—now officially headed to Ahmedabad.
