According to ESPNcricinfo, Dhawan's elevation was approved during a franchise board meeting on Wednesday, and the decision was supported by the Kings' newly-appointed head coach Trevor Bayliss.

Dhawan will take over for Agarwal, who was named captain just before the IPL 2022 season began. The Kings had retained Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh as their two players prior to the major auction, where Dhawan was the first player they purchased.

Dhawan, who has been one of the most consistent batters in the IPL since 2016, charge Kings Rs 8.25 crore earlier this year. He had a fantastic 2020 season, scoring 618 runs at a strike rate of over 145 for Delhi Capitals, who had acquired him via trade from Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dhawan scored 460 runs in 14 games for the Kings in his first season, averaging 38.33 and striking out 122.66 times.

Agarwal joined the Punjab franchise in 2018 and performed well with KL Rahul, the team's captain prior to the 2017-18 season. However, as he advanced through the ranks, his form began to deteriorate.

Agarwal scored 196 runs in 13 games, averaging 16.33 runs per game. The team also did poorly.

By November 15, when IPL franchises must submit their final list of retained players, it will be clear whether Kings will keep or release Agarwal. Kings agreed to pay Agarwal Rs 12 crore in accordance with IPL retention regulations.
