According to ESPNCricinfo, Pakistan's team is facing another time window of Shaheen being out of the game for an extended period of time. Only after the Pakistan team returns home will an official diagnosis be made. In any case, Afridi was expected to sit on the bench during the England Test series, which begins next month. That was a part of his gradual return from the original knee injury that he had faced during a series against Sri Lanka in July.

Shaheen completed his recovery in time for the T20 World Cup, and he was named to Pakistan's squad for the tournament. While he struggled in the first two matches, he eventually found his stride and played an important role in his team's journey to the final. He was Pakistan's joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with 11 wickets.

The injury flared up again during England's 13th over, when he took a running catch to dismiss batter Harry Brook. The physio and doctor assisted him off the field. Shaheen returned and attempted to finish his spell, but was unable to do so after bowling one ball. He was only able to bowl 2.1 overs out of his four overs.

His right knee is currently believed to be in a brace. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stated that it will take some time to assess the injury and provide additional information. On Monday, Shaheen and the rest of the team will return home via Mumbai.
