Sri Lanka initiates talks to form 'All-party' government
Advertisment
Colombo (Sri Lanka), July 29:In an effort to build an "all-party" government in the conflict-ridden country, the Sri Lankan government initiated talks with opposition parties on Thursday. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and newly elected president Ranil Wickremesinghe have started talking, and according to sources cited by the Daily Mirror, the talks should be concluded in a week. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the main opposition party, will not, however, collaborate with the government. However, a few of its legislators are thinking about switching to the ruling party on their own. Thursday, the National Freedom Front (NFF), which is led by MP Wimal Weerawansa, also voiced support for the president. According to MP Weerawansa, there are only two options left for the country: either let it descend into anarchy like in Haiti, or use consensus to at least temporarily save it from its current plight. He claimed that the president had made sincere efforts to pull the nation out of its current predicament and that his party was ready to lead that effort regardless of past political differences or enmity.
