Students protest metro fare hike, urge PM to intervene

Various students' bodies Thursday took out a protest march urging the prime minister to rollback the metro fare hike and give concessional passes to all Delhi University students. However, the march that began from the Shastri Bhawan was stopped a short distance away by the Rapid Action Force and the Delhi Police. Some students tried to break the barricades. A delegation was later allowed to submit a memorandum to officials at the PMO. Speaking to reporters, Delhi University All India Students Association (AISA) president Kawalpreet Kaur said they were asked to wait until the budget session gets over. "We are told that the officials are busy with ongoing budget session. We shall wait but if there is no positive response in the next 10 days we will gather again in large numbers to enter the PMO to raise our demand," Kaur said. Other student bodies including the Students' Federation of India and the Jamia Millia Islamia University students forum also took part in the protest. Kaur said, "The PM should understand that it has become impossible for the students of Delhi to survive with such high fares. He must act immediately on our demands." PTI
