SC allows 20 YO women to abort 24 week old foetus
A shocking case of pregnancy came to notice, when a Pune based woman asked for permission from the Supreme Court to abort a 24 week foetus. The foetus had no brain or skull, and was hence given a green signal to the 20 year old woman to abort the foetus. The medical board of the Pune-based B J Government Medical College confirmed that there was no medical treatment for the anomaly. "We consider it appropriate and in the interest of justice to allow termination of pregnancy," a bench comprising Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao said. Section 3(2) (b) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act prohibits abortion of a foetus after 20 weeks of pregnancy. However, the SC gave permission to the women as the new born would not have survived post delivery. -PTC News
