Uttarakhand: Bodies recovered from Tapovan Tunnel; toll rises to 50

A massive flood was reported from Uttarakhand, where the water level in Dhauliganga river rose suddenly following an avalanche near a power project at Raini village in Tapovan area of Chamoli district.

The families of the workers missing from the Rishiganga hydel project site also held a protest on Wednesday accusing the authorities of not carrying out the rescue operations properly after the sudden flood.

A senior official said that three bodies were recovered on Sunday from the Tapovan tunnel, Uttarakhand following a seven-day operation to rescue around 30 people trapped in it after a flashflood-hit Joshimath area of Chamoli district.

These are the first bodies to have been recovered from the tunnel at the site of the flood-ravaged Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project where people were at work when the calamity occurred last Sunday.

Ashok Kumar, Uttarakhand DGP said, “4 bodies retrieved from the Tapovan tunnel. Also, 2 bodies found in Raini village in the morning, taking today’s body count to 6. Out of 204 missing people, 44 have been found. 160 people are still missing.”

“5 bodies each recovered in Raini Village and Tapovan tunnel today. Rescue operation in full swing,” said Aditya Pratap Singh, Deputy Commandant NDRF in Chamoli district

State Disaster Response Force stated that 12 bodies have been recovered today, so far. The total number of bodies recovered reaches 50.

A massive search and rescue operation has been underway in the tunnel at Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project site.

The officials said a helicopter has been kept ready at the site to provide medical help to survivors, if any.
