The FIR against members of the Belagutti village gram panchayat was registered at the Nyamathi police station after members of a Bengaluru-based animal welfare body called Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA) cited a video showing a few of the strays dying after being injected with some sort of toxic substance in the Belagutti village.

The dogs were piled up and not even buried properly and most of them have decomposed due to the poison and only about 80 carcasses could be taken out for post-mortem, a member of CUPA told the Deccan Herald.

The accused panchayat committed such horrendous actions in order to get rid of stray dogs in the area, said an animal welfare officer working with CUPA.
