Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup:Dutch run to biggest ever win of WC
Defending champions the Netherlands continued bashing of its opponents as it raced to biggest ever win in the history of World up defeating Italy 12-1 in its last pool A match in the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup in London on Sunday. Earlier, China inspite of holding Asian Games champion Korea to 1-1 draw, made its exit from the tournament.
While The Netherlands have got direct entry to the quarter finals, Italy and Korea will play in the elimination matches against teams from pool B to decide other quarter finalists.
Of 99 goals scored in this World Cup, 26 of the goals have come from the Netherlands alone. Against the previous highest margin of 9-0 recorded by Germany against Nigeria, the Netherlands made look all its pool opponents - Korea, China and Italy - look pygmies by recording huge wins in all three games, conceding only two goals while scoring 26, the highest ever by any team in the league round.
Fredreique Malta, who set the scoring in motion for the Netherlands in the 10th minute with a field goal, added another goal in the 43rd minute as the Dutch went on scoring rampage. Interestingly, most of the Dutch goals came from rebounds as the Italian goalkeeper executed good saves on first shots but went clueless from devastating rebounds.
Kitty van Male (four), Kelly Jonker (two), Heuvel Carlien van den Dirkse (two), van Gaffen and Cala van Maasekker were the other scorers for the Netherlands.
The consolation goal for Italy came from Tiddi Chiara from a penalty corner with assist from Jasbeer Singh, the only player of Indian origin playing for Italy.
Of 13 goals scored during the game, six came from penalty corners and the remaining were all field goals
