In a major boost to the indigenous missile development programme, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired the Man-Portable Anti Tank Guided Missile system from a firing range in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.
This is the 3rd successful test firing of the missile system, which is being developed to cater to the Indian Army’s need for third generation anti-tank guided missiles. The missile was fired from a tripod and the target mimicked a functional tank.

In a video released by the news agency ANI, the missile is clearly seen hitting the target in top attack mode and completely destroying it.

Man Portable Anti Tank Guided Missile system (MPATGM) is being developed for infantry battalions of the Indian Army. The missile includes an infrared image seeker and advanced avionics.

Currently, the Indian Army is using vintage missiles, including the imported Milan 2T and Konkurs Russian anti-tank missile in the infantry and the third generation ATGM was a pressing need. Recently, the Indian Army proposed to buy 3,000 Milan 2T ATGMs as a temporary arrangement. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the successful MPATGM test.
