Amid crisis, former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena to run for office

Colombo (Sri Lanka), January 31: Former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday announced that he will contest the next Presidential elections with the support of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

Sirisena served as President from 2015-2019.


Presidential elections in Sri Lanka are set to be held in September 2024, according to Lanka Xpress.

Maithripala Sirisena made the announcement during a press conference at the SLFP headquarters. Addressing media, the former President stated that he is not afraid of any conspiracy against him.

"I will not back down from anything. I'm not afraid of any conspiracy. I respect the law and the court. I will contest for the next Presidential election with the support of the SLFP no matter what troubles were given," Maithripala Sirisena said.

Meanwhile, the country's Supreme Court on January 12 directed Sirisena to pay a sum of Sri Lankan Rupee 100 million as damages to the victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, Daily Mirror reported.
