92 people died after boat capsizes in Iraq

At least 92 people including 12 children died after an overcrowded boat capsized in Tigris River in Iraq on Thursday. According to media reports, there were at least 150 people including 80 women and children on board.

The ferry was transporting people from a bank of the river to a small tourist island.  It carried with over twice the permitted capacity. It sank halfway because of high water levels in the river. The emergency services reached the spot. The rescue teams recovered a number of bodies. The search operation is underway.

The media reports said Water Resources Department warned the locals about the rising water level because of the opening of dams. An investigation was immediately launched after the incident was reported.
