PTC News Desk: The BJP–Shiv Sena–NCP–led Mahayuti alliance scored a sweeping win in elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, clinching 207 municipal president posts on Sunday and dealing a major blow to the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which managed only 44.

The outcome reaffirmed Mahayuti’s dominance in the state following last year’s Assembly elections, while the MVA once again failed to regain public confidence. Final figures released by the State Election Commission late Sunday night showed the BJP emerging as the largest single gainer with 117 municipal president posts, followed by the Eknath Shinde–led Shiv Sena with 53 and the NCP with 37. The NCP, part of the BJP-led alliance, had contested 80 municipal president seats and won 37, including 10 of the 17 posts in Pune district, according to election officials.

Within the Opposition camp, the Congress secured 28 posts, the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar won seven, and the Uddhav Thackeray–led Shiv Sena was limited to just nine.

The poll panel also noted that parties registered with the commission but not recognised at the state or national level won four posts, while other unrecognised registered parties accounted for 28 municipal president positions. Independents secured five posts.
