PM Modi thanks Trump for birthday wishes, backs US efforts on ending Russia-Ukraine war
Trump, in a Truth Social post, called his exchange with PM Modi a 'wonderful phone call', praising his leadership and India’s support for US efforts to end Ukraine war
PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked US President Donald Trump for his warm birthday wishes ahead of his 75th birthday, highlighting New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening the India-US partnership and supporting Washington’s peace efforts in Ukraine.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Like you, I am fully committed to advancing the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership. We support your initiatives aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict.”
Trump, in a Truth Social post, described his interaction with PM Modi as a “wonderful phone call,” lauding the Indian leader’s performance and appreciating India’s backing for US-led efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war. “Just had a wonderful phone call with my friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I wished him a very Happy Birthday! He is doing a tremendous job. Thank you for supporting our efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine!” Trump wrote.
The exchange came at a sensitive moment in bilateral relations, following Washington’s decision to impose heavy tariffs on Indian imports, including a 50% duty overall and a 25% levy specifically targeting New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. Earlier this week, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick warned that India risked losing preferential access to the American market if it resisted diversifying its imports and buying US agricultural products like corn.
Despite the tensions, trade negotiators from both sides resumed talks on Tuesday — the first since the tariff hikes — with Washington describing the discussions as “positive.” The renewed dialogue is seen as a step toward resolving differences and reinvigorating ties that have been strained in recent months.
The India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership spans defence, trade, energy, and technology. During a February meeting in Washington, both leaders set an ambitious goal of doubling bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
