In a major setback to Punjab, West Bengal, Kerala, Bihar and Haryana Government, Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the plea of the state governments , seeking permission to appoint Director General of Police (DGP) through an internal state committee rather than UPSC.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed the plea filed by the state governments , seeking to implement their local laws regarding selection and appointment of Director General of Police (DGP).

With SC decision, the state government will send a list of senior police officers , at least three months prior to the retirement of the incumbent to UPSC. The UPSC will prepare a panel , which will appoint one of the persons from the list.

Earlier, the Supreme court on December 12, 2018 had extended the tenures of present DGPs of Punjab and Haryana . The tenure of Punjab DGP Suresh Arora and Haryana DGP B S Sandhu was extended till January 31 , this year. They were due to retire on December 31,2018.
