IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya replaces Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain
IPL 2024: Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), has named star all-rounder Hardik Pandya as team captain for the 2024 edition of the league.
"Mumbai Indians today announced a significant leadership transition for the upcoming 2024 season. Renowned all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take the helm as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, succeeding its longest-serving, one of the most successful and loved captains the illustrious Rohit Sharma," the franchise said.
Pandya had been moved from the Gujarat Titans (GT) to his former franchise, the Mumbai Indians (MI), in November of this year. The all-rounder captained GT for two years, spearheading their campaign with style. Hardik ensured GT's fairytale start in 2022, collecting the coveted title, while they finished runners-up in their second season after a last-ball defeat in a thrilling final earlier this year.
Pandya has huge shoes to fill as MI's new captain, as Rohit has led the team to five IPL titles.
Pandya scored 833 runs for GT in 31 matches from 2022 to 23 at an average of 37.86 and a strike rate of over 133, with six half-centuries and a best score of 87*. He also took 11 wickets for the squad, with a high of 3/17.
Pandya also played in 92 matches for MI between 2015 and 2021, accumulating 1,476 runs at an average of 27.33 and a strike rate of more than 153, with four half-centuries and a best score of 91. He also got 42 team wickets, with the best bowling statistics of 3/20.
Pandya has five IPL titles, four with MI (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) and one with GT (2022).
Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance for the Mumbai Indians, commented on the move, saying, "It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin (Tendulkar) to Harbhajan (Singh) and Ricky (Ponting) to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season."
"We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL."
"Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and loved teams ever. We will look forward to his guidance and experience on and off the field to further strengthen MI. We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best."
