The 14th Dalai Lama is considered the spiritual leader of Tibet even though he humbly addresses himself as a simple Buddhist monk.

He has a large number of followers all across the world.

The Tibetan establishment is in exile, and Tibetans in exile commemorated the occasion at The Dalai Lama's major temple in Mcleodganj. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, attended the birthday celebrations.

The Dalai Lama's birthday was a major occasion for Tibetans living in Tibet in exile, and it was celebrated with zeal. On the occasion of his birthday, followers from all around the world, including international leaders, greeted the Dalai Lama.

Wishes pour in

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took to Twitter to wish the 14th Dalai Lama on his birthday.

"Spoke to His Holiness @DalaiLama and conveyed heartfelt greetings to him on his 88th birthday. Wishing him a long and healthy life," he tweeted.

Since his self-imposed retirement as Tibetans' temporal leader in 2011, the Dalai Lama has not issued a political message on his birthday. The Dalai Lama handed over temporal control over the Tibetan government in exile to the elected government in 2011.

Despite devolving temporal control over the Tibetan government in exile, the Dalai Lama remains a symbol of Tibetan opposition to Chinese rule in Tibet.
