23-year-old Punjab woman strangled to death in Canada, live-in partner arrested
PTC News Desk: A 23-year-old woman from Ludhiana, Punjab, was allegedly strangled to death at her home in Edmonton, Canada. Police have arrested her 22-year-old live-in partner, an Indian national, in connection with the case.
The victim, Damanpreet Kaur, was a native of Samrala in Ludhiana district and had moved to Canada around five years ago on a student visa.
According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), officers responded to a call on July 9 after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman with suspicious injuries at a home in the Silverberry neighbourhood of southeast Edmonton. An autopsy conducted on July 14 confirmed that Kaur died due to strangulation, and the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
Police arrested Ritish Kumar on July 22 and charged him with second-degree murder. Investigators said the case is being treated as an intimate partner homicide and confirmed that no other suspects are being sought.
Family members said Damanpreet's parents had reportedly taken a loan to send her to Canada for higher studies and a better future.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign started to help bring Kaur's body back to India has raised over $18,000, close to its $20,000 fundraising goal.
