22 killed, 33 injured in stampede on foot overbridge in Mumbai

At least 22 people have died and 30 have been seriously injured in a stampede at the foot over bridge at Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road station on Friday. The incident occurred during peak hours following rains at the station.

The tragedy took place amid rain in the city around 10.40 am when the FOB was heavily crowded, a police official said. Five National Disaster Response Force personnel reached the spot.

An eyewitness, who was standing at the station platform when the incident took place, said, “Commuters started panicking after somebody shouted that the bridge was collapsing and that there was a short circuit. People started pushing and those in the middle of the stairs fell. Many commuters who tried to escape through the railing got stuck.”

KEM hospital confirms 55 casualties and releases names of victims. In all, 22 have died, including 13 men, 8 women and 1 child, and 33 have been injured, of whom there are 24 men and nine women.
