A first: Chandigarh Smart prepaid card launched for City residents

UT Administrator and Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore today launched Chandigarh Smart City Card which can be used to make payment at government offices in the city.

The card can be used from December 25 when its soft launch will take place to mark Good Governance Day, the residents of Chandigarh will only have access to the card if they have an Aadhaar card. Registrations for the card will begin at all Bank of India branches tomorrow and Sampark centres on December 15.

Applicants will have to pay Rs 500, of which Rs 150 is the card-making fee while Rs 350 could be used for payments. One can get the card recharged at Sampark centres or online through debit card, internet banking or UPI-BHIM applications.

Like an identity card, the photography and other details of the card holder will be carried on the card. The card holder will get a PIN number, which can be changed.

Badnore said, “This is yet another big day for the City Beautiful. I am glad that we have launched the country’s first Smart City Card in Chandigarh, which will eventually benefit the entire nation.”

The card holder can make the payment either through a mobile app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the card reader the bank will provide to merchants.
