Electricity becomes Rs 3 per unit cheaper for all slabs in Punjab

In what may be seen as a poll gimmick, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday announced to slash electricity tariff by Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers. The Assembly elections in Punjab are scheduled for 2022.
The move is set to put a burden of Rs 3,316 crore per year on the state exchequer.

The new power tariff will be now Rs 1.19 up to 100 units. From 100 to 300 units, Rs 4 per unit would be charged. Earlier, it used to be Rs 7. Above 300 units, people will get electricity at the rate of Rs 5 per unit.
Charanjit Singh Channi, while addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, said, "We are reducing electricity tariff by Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers.". He described it a "big Diwali gift" for the people of the state. The decision would come into effect immediately.
