Electricity becomes Rs 3 per unit cheaper for all slabs in Punjab

In what may be seen as a poll gimmick, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday announced to slash electricity tariff by Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers. The Assembly elections in Punjab are scheduled for 2022. The move is set to put a burden of Rs 3,316 crore per year on the state exchequer. Also read | Punjab Advocate General APS Deol resigns The new power tariff will be now Rs 1.19 up to 100 units. From 100 to 300 units, Rs 4 per unit would be charged. Earlier, it used to be Rs 7. Above 300 units, people will get electricity at the rate of Rs 5 per unit. Charanjit Singh Channi, while addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, said, "We are reducing electricity tariff by Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers.". He described it a "big Diwali gift" for the people of the state. The decision would come into effect immediately. On the other hand, ahead of Diwali, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi also announced 11 per cent increase in DA for govt employees. -PTC News
