Im giving up cinema: Thalapathy Vijay announces retirement from acting after glorious 33 years
He shared that his decision to step away from films was not impulsive but the result of careful and prolonged thought.
PTC News Desk: Thalapathy Vijay has formally announced his decision to retire from acting, bringing an end to an extraordinary 33-year career in cinema. The heartfelt announcement was made during the grand music launch of Jana Nayagan in Malaysia. This film will now serve as Vijay’s final appearance on screen before he transitions fully into public service and politics, marking a historic milestone in his life.
Speaking emotionally to a massive gathering of fans, the 51-year-old actor reflected on his journey in the film industry. Vijay began his career as a child artist at the age of 10 in Vetri and later made his debut as a lead actor with Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992.
He shared that his decision to step away from films was not impulsive but the result of careful and prolonged thought. Emphasising his commitment to his supporters, he said that since people have stood by him in theatres for decades, he is now ready to stand for them for the next 30 to 33 years.
Vijay also spoke candidly about the challenges he faced throughout his career, noting that he encountered criticism from the very beginning. However, he credited his fans for remaining steadfast in their support. He recalled entering the film industry with modest dreams, only to receive love and loyalty that exceeded all expectations. In an emotional moment, he said he had hoped to build a small sand house, but his fans had given him a palace instead.
The actor confirmed that his complete focus will now be on politics. After founding his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, last year, Vijay is preparing to contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
