Ramayana: Ranbir Kapoor confirms double role; Lord Rama and Lord Parshurama
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, is already generating massive buzz. However, Ranbir Kapoor isn’t just portraying Lord Rama; he will also be seen taking on the role of Lord Parshurama, adding an intriguing double role to his performance.
While Kapoor headlines the film as Lord Rama, he has confirmed that he will also portray Lord Parshurama, another avatar of Vishnu. The announcement came during a media interaction at the teaser launch in Los Angeles, adding a new layer of intrigue to the film’s narrative.
Speaking about the challenge, Ranbir explained how he approached the dual roles by focusing on their contrasting temperaments. “Lord Vishnu had different avatars. Lord Rama was an avatar, and Lord Parshurama was an avatar before Lord Rama."

He added, “Just to get the opportunity, you know, how I got to play Lord Rama, to also play Lord Parshurama was fantastic. I think as an actor, apart from body language, I think if you deeply understand the spirituality and the emotionality of the characters, I think everything starts from there. I think that’s what I did the year leading up to the shoot of Ramayana, to understand who these people and characters are, what they stand for and what their motives are."
Parshurama, born as Ramabhadra to Sage Jamadagni and Renuka, is considered the sixth avatar of Vishnu. Known as a warrior-sage, he uniquely blends Brahminical wisdom with Kshatriya valor. His legend revolves around restoring dharma (righteousness) during times of chaos.
Parshurama is also regarded as one of the chiranjivis immortal beings believed to still exist and destined to reappear during the era of Vishnu’s future incarnation, Kalki.
The teaser subtly hints at Parshurama’s presence. In one striking moment, Kapoor is seen catching an axe-like weapon, leading many viewers to speculate that the scene depicts the iconic encounter between Rama and Parshurama described in Ramayana.
In the original text, Parshurama, enraged, challenges Rama and hurls his divine axe gifted by Shiva after intense penance. The teaser stops short of revealing the full confrontation, leaving audiences eager for more.
Star-Studded Cast and Release Timeline
The film boasts a powerful ensemble cast. Sai Pallavi will portray Goddess Sita, while Yash takes on the role of Ravana. Sunny Deol will appear as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is planned as a two-part epic. The first installment is slated for release this Diwali, with the second part scheduled for Diwali 2027.
