Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali awarded 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for resolving border conflict

Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali on Friday has been named for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea. Abiy Ahmed Ali has been awarded the prestigious award “for his initiative to achieve peace and international cooperation”. The Nobel Committee jury said in a statement that the "Nobel Peace Prize 2019 to be awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea."

However, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was favorite to win the prize but experts had a different opinion, that the Ethiopian PM or a representative of the free press could be the more likely winner. Peter Wallensteen, Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Sweden's Uppsala University, said: "Abiy Ahmed would be a good candidate, as his tenure has had peace-inducing effects in Ethiopia and on the region.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is meant to recognize all those who are working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northwest African regions. The announcement for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize was made on Friday at the Nobel Institute in Oslo.
