Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp agree to comply with new IT rules

The social media giants Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp have agreed to comply with the Centre's new IT rules. As per the guidelines, these companies have decided to appoint statutory officers which was a mandate under the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. As per the report, Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp along with Koo, Sharchat, Telegram and LinkedIn have submitted the names of these nodal officers to the concerned authority, however, Twitter hasn't yet sent details. Most of the social media platforms, including Koo, Sharechat, Telegram, LinkedIn, Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc., shared details of their Chief Compliance Officer (CCO), Nodal Contact Person (NCP), and Grievance Officer (GO) with the Union Electronics and IT Ministry as required by the new IT rules, the sources said. The social media giants Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp have agreed to comply with the Centre's new IT rules. It may be recalled that the government of India on February 25 had asked all major social media platforms to comply with the new social rules until May 26. Even as Facebook-owned WhatsApp had claimed that the Centre's new media rules for intermediaries put end-to-end encryption and its benefits at risk.
