A major crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami in Kashmir, top leadership arrested

Jammu and Kashmir police launched a massive crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami in Kashmir on Saturday morning. It has arrested JeI leaders and activists including Chairman Abdul Hamid Fayaz in the valley.

In the winter capital of the State, security forces mass arrest drive on the intervening night of February 22 and 23 to pick up Jamaat leaders and cadre from their residences. The major crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, was launched ahead of the hearing of on Article 35A in the Supreme Court. The centre has called for an urgent deployment of 100 companies of paramilitary forces in Kashmir.

Those arrested or detained by the police included, Ameer Jama’at Dr Abdul Hamid Fayaz, Advocate Zahid Ali (spokesperson), Ghulam Qadir Lone (former secretary general), Abdur Rouf (Ameer Zila Islamabad), Mudasir Ahmad (Ameer Tehsil Pahalgam), Abdul Salam (Dialgam), Bakhtawar Ahmad (Dialgam), Mohammad Hayat (Tral), Bilal Ahmad (Chadoora), Ghulam Mohammad Dar (Chak Sangran).

Jamaat-e-Islami Major crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami in Kashmir

JeI, which is part of separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s Tehreek-e-Hurriyat has condemned the crackdown. It further said, “the move is a well-designed conspiracy to pave way for further uncertainty in the region."
