Heatwave 2024: Directorate of Education issues guidelines for schools amid rising temperatures

Heatwave 2024: Amid rising temperatures, the Delhi government's Directorate of Education (DoE) has proactively implemented measures to safeguard the welfare of students and staff in schools. Stringent instructions have been issued to both government and private institutions, outlining a comprehensive set of nine guidelines to address the challenges posed by the imminent heatwave. 

List of directives that the DoE has issued in its heat wave guidelines for all government, aided and unaided schools: 


1. Display posters on prevention of Heat Wave Related Illness, (Annexure-B and C)

2. Discontinue students' assembly in the school during the afternoon shift.

3. No open air classes to be conducted.

4. No outdoor activities to be conducted when a heat wave is declared.

5. Clean drinking water for students should be available at all times. RO's must be properly functional.

6. Students should be given water breaks during classes.

7. Sensitize parents through SMC members to ensure that students cover their head (use umbrella, hat, cap, towel, and other traditional head gears) during direct exposure to sunlight Le. while leaving/coming to schools during day time.

8. First Aid kits must have ORS for students who show signs of heat related illness.

9. Report any case of heat related illness to a nearby health facility/hospital.


Notably, India is set to witness a hotter-than-usual summer this year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting that temperatures may be above normal and worst heatwave conditions are expected from May to June.
