PTC News Desk: Police sub-inspector Gopal Badane, accused of sexual assaulting a woman doctor who died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Satara district, was arrested on Saturday evening, hours after a co-accused was taken into custody.
PSI Badane later surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station, Satara SP Tushar Doshi said.
Bankar, who has been accused of mentally harassing the victim and now faces charges of abetment to suicide, was presented before a Satara district court, which remanded him to four days of police custody.
The victim, a doctor from Beed district in the Marathwada region who was working at a government hospital in Satara, was discovered hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan town on Thursday night.
In a suicide note reportedly written on her palm, she alleged that police sub-inspector Badane had raped her several times, while Bankar, a software engineer, had subjected her to mental harassment.
A case of rape and abetment of suicide has been filed against both men in Phaltan, Satara district. Police said Bankar is the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor lived, and that she had spoken to him over the phone shortly before her death.
