Ganderbal encounter: Jammu and Kashmir LG orders magisterial probe as family of deceased claims he was civilian
Widespread concerns were raised over the killing as the army confirmed neutralising the terrorist, while the youth's family objected and said he was a civilian and not a terrorist.
Ganderbal encounter: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered magisterial probe into encounter in Ganderbal district in which alleged terrorist was killed by security forces.
“I have ordered a thorough and impartial magisterial inquiry into the Arhama, Ganderbal incident. The inquiry will examine all aspects related to the incident and ensure that justice is served,” the LG’s office posted on X.
Widespread concerns were raised over the killing as the army confirmed neutralising the terrorist, while the youth's family objected and said he was a civilian and not a terrorist.
The family of the slain youth—Rashid Ahmad Mughal—had claimed that the deceased had no links to terrorism.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said on Thursday that, “I believe the claim of the family should not be dismissed out of hand. At the very least this encounter needs a transparent & time bound probe with the facts made public”.
“Any attempt to obfuscate or delay the announcement of a probe will only damage credibility & that is not in anyone’s interest,” he had said on X.
The inquiry is mandated to be completed within seven days, with the final report to be submitted directly to the home department.
