No gold purchase, foreign travel: PM Modi urges citizens to embrace swadeshi spirit
PM Modi made the appeal while congratulating Indians on the economy growing 7.8% in the April-June quarter, saying the latest growth figures demonstrated India’s ability to maintain momentum despite global instability, wars and disruptions to supply chains.
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi have urged the Indians once again to embrace 'swadeshi' spirit while buying or travelling. Reiterating on his appeal made a few months ago amid raging West Asia crisis, he once again urged the people to avoid foreign travel and unnecessary gold purchases to help India tide over war-related shocks.
PM Modi made the appeal while congratulating Indians on the economy growing 7.8% in the April-June quarter, saying the latest growth figures demonstrated India’s ability to maintain momentum despite global instability, wars and disruptions to supply chains.
If you go on holiday, go to a place in India. Wedding destinations can be in India. We should live the mantra of ‘wed in India’," PM Modi said in a video message.
“And if there is no need, then even gold shouldn’t be bought," he added.
The prime minister said greater emphasis on “swadeshi" and self-reliance would help India sustain its economic expansion.
“The more we emphasise swadeshi, the more we emphasise self-reliance," PM Modi said.
His comments came a day after official figures showed that India’s GDP grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year. Although growth was lower than the 8.6% recorded in the previous quarter, it was still above the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 7%. The growth also kept India among the world’s fastest-growing major economies.
PM Modi praised the people of India for the strong economic performance. He said the growth rate reflected the determination and hard work of the people.
“Everyone is happy with the 7.8% growth. I congratulate the citizens for their determination and hard work. This growth is a result of the collective strength of the people,” he said.
PM Modi also highlighted the challenges caused by global conflicts and supply-chain problems that have continued since the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The world is facing wars and crises. There are conflicts everywhere, and supply chains have been badly affected. Since the Covid period in 2020, there has been little stability around the world. Despite these challenges, India is continuing to grow rapidly,” PM Modi said.
