PTC Web Desk: Former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, on Wednesday announced that she will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections on a ticket from the Bhartiya Rashtrawadi Party .

Addressing a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club, Dr Navjot Kaur said she had already informed the public about her decision earlier in the day through a post on X (formerly Twitter). She also recently shared a poster of the nine-year-old Delhi-based party, pointing towards her formal association.

Explaining her move, she criticised the financial demands of major political parties, saying she was unwilling to spend large sums of money to secure an election ticket. “I would rather invest that money in meaningful work,” she said, adding that she has been receiving support calls from abroad as well.

Dr Navjot Kaur announced that the party aims to contest all 117 seats in Punjab. Outlining her governance vision, she said ministers would be required to submit performance reports within a month if her party comes to power. She said only experienced people would be included in the Cabinet, and portfolios would be assigned based on expertise.

Agriculture, she said, would be a central focus area. Among her more controversial proposals, she suggested allowing controlled cultivation of opium for farmers, arguing it could serve as an economic alternative.

Highlighting concerns over rising stress levels among families, Navjot Kaur proposed expanding access to counselling services to address mental health issues among youth.

On Punjab’s ongoing drug crisis, Navjot Kaur argued that simply attempting to eliminate drug use is not enough. She stressed the importance of providing viable alternatives to prevent youth from turning to substance abuse.

Responding to questions about political leaders, she described Raghav Chadha as a “good individual” who raises important issues.

She also referred to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as “still like a sister,” indicating that personal relationships remain intact despite political shifts.

Speaking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she recalled receiving political opportunities during her earlier tenure and acknowledged the support she had experienced at the time.

Navjot Kaur stated that Navjot Singh Sidhu is currently not affiliated with any political party and has not been approached by his former party since 2022.
