Trump calls PM Modi ‘calm, cool and a total killer’ ahead of bilateral meeting at G7
US President Donald Trump showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit, describing him as “calm, cool and a total killer” ahead of their first bilateral meeting in over a year
PTC Web Desk: US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, describing the Indian leader as “calm”, “cool” and a “total killer”, a remark he has earlier used to highlight Modi’s negotiating skills and leadership style.
The comments came during a gathering of world leaders before the two leaders sat down for their first formal bilateral interaction in more than a year. Trump’s praise was seen as a positive signal amid recent indications of unease in India-US relations.
Addressing fellow leaders, Trump contrasted his own personality with that of the Indian Prime Minister. “Unlike PM Modi, who is calm, cool and a total killer, I am not. Just look at him,” Trump remarked, drawing attention to Modi’s composed demeanour.
The warm exchange marked a noticeable shift from the previous day’s interaction between the two leaders, which had appeared more restrained than their traditionally cordial meetings. Instead of their customary public display of warmth, the leaders greeted each other with a formal handshake, prompting speculation about tensions in bilateral ties.
However, Trump’s remarks at the G7 gathering suggested that the personal rapport between the two leaders remains intact despite differences on several policy issues.
This is not the first time Trump has used the phrase “total killer” while referring to Modi. During the 2024 US presidential campaign, Trump had similarly praised the Indian Prime Minister during a podcast interview.
At the time, Trump had described Modi as both a close friend and a formidable leader. “Modi is a friend of mine and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. On the outside, he looks like your father. He is the nicest person, but also a total killer,” Trump had said.
