Haryana fulfils long-pending Sikh community demand: History of Sikh Gurus added to Class 8 curriculum
PTC Web Desk: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has fulfilled a significant commitment made to the Sikh community and the people of the state by incorporating the history of Sikh Gurus and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur into the Class 8 history curriculum in government schools.
With this move, school students will gain a deeper understanding of the teachings, sacrifices and contributions of the Sikh Gurus as well as the remarkable legacy of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur.
The Haryana Chief Minister had announced during the 350th martyrdom anniversary commemorations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji in Haryana that Sikh history, along with the ideals and sacrifices of the Gurus, would be included in the school curriculum to educate future generations. The state government has now implemented that commitment by formally introducing the subject into the syllabus.
Speaking on the initiative, Saini said from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, all Sikh Gurus spread the message of humanity, equality, service, compassion, brotherhood and social justice. Their teachings inspired society to rise above divisions based on caste, religion, and class and work towards the welfare of all.
He noted that the principles espoused by the Sikh Gurus remain relevant today, as they continue to promote social harmony, ethical values, and national unity.
The Chief Minister further stated that the lives of the Sikh Gurus and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur represent a source of inspiration not only for the Sikh community but for the entire nation.
Emphasising the importance of connecting younger generations with India’s rich heritage, the Chief Minister said the newly introduced chapters would help students develop values such as patriotism, social responsibility, service, communal harmony and responsible citizenship.
Dr Prabhleen Singh, OSD to the Chief Minister, thanked Nayab Singh Saini for taking this important step. He said the decision fulfilled a long-pending and emotionally significant demand of the Sikh community and reflected the government's respect for the sentiments of all sections of society.
