Congress MLA Pargat Singh raises questions, says government avoided amendment to respect act
Congress MLA Pargat Singh raised questions over the Punjab government's handling of the Assembly session and alleged that it was avoiding amendments to the Respect Act.
Singh said the government introduced nine bills in a single day and questioned how MLAs could properly read and examine so many bills in such a short time.
“All the bills are in English. Perhaps the government's highly educated MLAs can read them, but it is not practical to study nine bills in one day.”
He said the government should extend the duration of the Assembly session to allow adequate discussion and scrutiny of the bills.

PTC News Desk: The Punjab government is expected to table eight bills in the house on the final day of the Punjab Assembly Monsoon session. These include the Punjab Common Infrastructure (Amendment) Bill, the Un-Aided Educational Institutions Fee (Amendment) Bill aimed at curbing arbitrary fee hikes in schools, and the Punjab State Outsourced Personnel Bill.
The bill related to outsourced employees proposes bringing around 65,000 outsourced workers under the Punjab government on a contractual basis, taking them out of the existing outsourcing and contractual arrangement.
The final day of the session is also expected to witness heated exchanges with the Opposition demanding an extension of the Assembly's sitting hours.
The Congress remained particularly aggressive throughout this session. Congress MLAs arrived at the Assembly wearing black turbans and raised several issues concerning Punjab, targeting the state government. Meanwhile, the government also moved a resolution against the BJP-led central government.
Meanwhile the Assembly also witnessed heated exchanges over the AAP government's proposed anti-sacrilege law. During zero-hour, Ganieve Kaur Majithia from Majitha constituency strongly criticised the government over the law and questioned that why amendments were not made to the "controversial clauses" in the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.
