Suicide attack targets Afghanistan election workers in Kabul

Kabul, Afghanistan: At least two people were killed and seven others were injured in an explosion near the Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday. According to the media reports, a suicide bomber targeted a staff vehicle. One IEC staffer, one police officer were killed in an attack. Also, four others IEC staffers, one civilian and two police officials sustained injuries in the attack.

The Kabul police chief told the media sources that the explosion took place around 8:15 am, local time in Kabul city. He further said that the suicide bomber detonated the bomb close to the gate of the office.

ISIS claimed the responsibility of the attack. This attack came only a week after when thousands of Afghan nationals cast their votes in the parliamentary elections. Many insurgent groups like the Taliban have vowed to disrupt the polling process.

The US ambassador to Afghanistan, John Bass, called this attack as an attack on Democracy.

John Bass tweeted, “The United States condemns this morning’s attack on Independent #Election Commission employees and sends our condolences to the victims and their families. An attack on #Afghanistan election process is an attack on democracy.”
