Boss demands sick leave for 8-minute bathroom break, sparks outrage
PTC News Desk: A Reddit user, 'SpecterGygax,' shared an unsettling experience regarding her boss's response to her brief bathroom break. She detailed stepping away for eight minutes while working from home, only to receive a voicemail from her boss, instructing her to take sick leave or PTO for the duration.
Expressing her frustration, she highlighted the changing dynamics of her job, once considered a decent opportunity for a college student. She emphasized the worsening work environment, citing customer behavior, inadequate supervisor support against abuse, unexpected schedule changes, and assigning tasks beyond legal boundaries without necessary qualifications. Additionally, she noted the comparatively low pay, painting a grim picture of her job's deteriorating conditions.
The Reddit post, made a few days back, garnered over 7,000 upvotes and generated an outpouring of supportive comments from fellow users who criticized the management's treatment and the decline in workplace conditions.
Redditors react to the incident
One Reddit user pointed out the potential motive behind the boss's actions, suggesting that managers dealing with remote employees may attempt to micromanage to validate their role. They insinuated that the boss might aim to justify their position by monitoring and reprimanding staff for perceived breaks abuse.
Another user advised reporting the incident as harassment to HR, emphasising the importance of documenting such actions as a part of establishing a trail of evidence.
A different commenter urged the individual to consider leaving the job and even recommended reporting the company for any unlawful practices before departing. They suggested that by doing so, the person might secure a favorable severance package in case of retaliation.
Yet another Redditor advocated for taking regular breaks, emphasising the importance of adhering to one's rights and entitlements in the workplace.
