SAS Nagar (Mohali), July 11: In response to heavy rains and widespread water-logging affecting various areas of the district, Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety in SAS Nagar (Mohali) during the monsoon season.

To address the potential risks posed by heavy rainfall, the Deputy Commissioner has issued directives to the Municipal Corporation Mohali, Municipal Committees, P.W.D.B.&R., and the DDA to identify structures and habitations that have become structurally unsafe. The primary objective is to promptly evacuate these buildings, minimising the potential harm or damage to human life.

Considering the inherent dangers associated with water bodies during the monsoon season, the general public has been strongly advised against visiting or approaching lakes, ponds, puddles, and seep areas until October 1, to mitigate the risk of drowning incidents. Additionally, the Mohali District Municipal Committees, Gamada, and the SAS Nagar Forest Department have been instructed to swiftly remove fallen trees from roads and public areas.

The Municipal Corporation Mohali, Municipal Committees, and PWDB&R within the district have been tasked with the immediate repair of potholes on roads. The Traffic Police and SP have been assigned the responsibility of preventing accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The implementation of barricades or other preventive measures has been recommended to enhance public safety in hazardous areas.

To ensure road safety, the Municipal Corporation Mohali and Municipal Committees have been directed to prioritise the maintenance of manhole covers and road lanes, minimizing the risk of accidents. Additionally, the SPs, Traffic Police, and SDMs are coordinating with road-owning agencies such as NHAI, PWD, and Mandi Board to effectively address waterlogging issues in underpasses.

This includes the proper cordon-off of subways, the diversion of traffic to alternate routes, and the dissemination of warnings to the public to prevent entry into waterlogged underpasses without assessing the water level.

Regarding electrical safety, government and private establishments/offices have been urged to conduct thorough inspections of their premises to identify potential electrocution risks resulting from dampness and waterlogging. The SE, PSPCL, Municipal Corporation Mohali, and Municipal Committees have been assigned the task of inspecting electric poles and street lights to ensure pedestrian safety. The civil surgeon has been directed to make necessary arrangements for immediate medical assistance to individuals affected by electrocution or drowning incidents.

Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner has called upon all government and private establishments/offices in SAS Nagar district to consider the closure of their offices in response to rain forecasts and waterlogging situations. SDMs have been entrusted with monitoring the water table and making suitable arrangements for drainage. Strict adherence to the government's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for emergency management has been emphasized to ensure effective response and preparedness during this monsoon season.
