3 dead, 179 injured after Turkish plane skids off and breaks into pieces

Turkey Plane Crash: At least three people have died and 179 people were injured when a plane skidded off the runway at Istanbul airport, Turkey. The plane caught fire and split into three after landing in an uneven weather. The live images broadcast on local TV channel showed several people climbing through a large crack and escaping to one of the wings at the rear.

Boeing 737 operated by Turkish carrier Pegasus Airlines had flown into Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport from the Aegean port city of Izmir on Wednesday. The plane was hit by strong winds and heavy rain in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city. Three people were killed while 179 were injured, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca reported.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Mehmet Cahit Turhan stated that some of the passengers evacuated the plane by themselves but the others were stuck inside and the rescue team was working to free them. The plane was carrying 177 passengers and six crew members. As per report, 12 children were onboard.

Also, Istanbul governor Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement that the plane slid some 60 metres (200 feet) after skidding off the runway. He added that the plane fell about 30-40 meters down a bank. Attributing to bad weather, Yerlikaya stated that it could have been more serious.
