PTC News Desk: In another case of targeted killing, a Hindu man was thrashed and killed on Thursday in Bangladesh.

The deceased has been identified as Joy Mahapatro who succumbed to his injuries after being in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

This incident happened only a few days after a 25-year-old Hindu man died when he jumped into a canal to escape a mob that was chasing him on suspicion of theft. His body, identified as Mithun Sarkar from Bhandarpur village, was recovered by police on Tuesday afternoon.

In recent weeks, violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh has sharply increased as the country approaches its first parliamentary elections since the 2024 uprising that removed the Sheikh Hasina government. Human rights groups say these killings are not isolated cases but signs that the state is failing to protect vulnerable communities.

On Thursday, Bangladesh police arrested the main suspect in the lynching of another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker who was attacked over allegations of blasphemy. The suspect has been identified as Yasin Arafat, a former teacher believed to have led and actively taken part in the assault.

Dipu, aged 27, was killed on December 18 in Mymensingh district. Reports say he was forced to resign by his factory supervisors, then dragged out and handed over to an angry mob.

The crowd beat him to death, hung his body from a tree, and set it on fire.

Investigators later found that several of Dipu’s coworkers were involved in the attack.
