PTC News Desk: A powerful earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Friday, briefly halting President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press conference of the year as seismic warning alarms went off.

Mexico’s national seismological agency said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, with its epicentre near San Marcos in Guerrero state, close to the Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco. The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 35 kilometres, roughly 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo in the mountainous region around 57 miles northeast of Acapulco. Sheinbaum later resumed the briefing and said Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado had informed her that no major damage had been reported so far.

The tremors sent residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco rushing out into the streets. According to AFP, central parts of Mexico City are particularly vulnerable to earthquake damage because they are built on soft soil from an ancient lakebed.
