White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to step down at month end, will be Trump's 'outside advisor'
PTC News Desk: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will step down from her position at the end of August but will continue working with President Donald Trump as an outside adviser.
Leavitt, 28, is the youngest person ever to serve as White House Press Secretary. She said she decided to leave the demanding role to spend more time with her two children.
In a post on X, Leavitt described her time as Press Secretary as the “honour and adventure of a lifetime.” However, she said balancing motherhood with the responsibilities of the job had become difficult. After returning from maternity leave following the birth of her second child, a daughter, in May, she realised she could not give both her family and the job the time and attention they needed.
During her 18 months in office, Leavitt became known as a strong supporter of Trump and for her heated exchanges with reporters during White House press briefings.
She is expected to remain active in Trump’s political circle after leaving the White House. As an outside communications adviser, she will continue supporting Trump and the broader “Make America Great Again” movement.
Leavitt joined Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and later worked as a spokesperson for his transition team. She was appointed White House Press Secretary in January 2025 at the age of 26.
During her tenure, the White House also changed its relationship with the media. Along with communications director Steven Cheung, Leavitt helped introduce a new system that gave the administration more control over media access. The White House also increased access for podcasts, newsletters and digital media platforms and created a special “new media” seat in the briefing room.
