PTC News Desk: A 42-year-old Indian-origin man had admitted to killing his wife but has denied committing murder during a court appearance in Australia. He rather told the court that he should instead be held for manslaughter.

"I plead for manslaughter, but not guilty for murder." His statement came following direction from his lawyer, James Marcus, ABC News reported.

Vikrant Thakur, 42, appeared second time in the court since being charged with murder of his 36-year-old wife Supriya Thakur, late last year. Investigators continue to gather and assess evidence, and the matter remains subject to judicial review.

Both are deemed as serious felonies, however the key difference between the both is the intent or premeditation. While murder is committed intentionally, manslaughter refers to circumstances that lead to the unintentional death of a person.

The incident unfolded on Decembe 21 at a Northfield home in Adelaide's inner northern area, triggering swift police response. According to the records submitted in the court, the police received a call regarding a disturbance and found Supriya unconscious at the property upon arrival. They tried to revive her via CPR, but she could not be revived, the records stated.

According to the police, another person, uninjured, was also present at the crime scene. The mobile phones of the Thakurs have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

After Thakur's initial court date on December 22, the proceedings were adjourned for 16 weeks, while prosecutors await further evidence, including DNA analysis and post-mortem report.
