Massive earthquake of 7.7 magnitude strikes Indonesia, buildings collapse; five killed

PTC News Desk: At least five people were killed after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia early Saturday. The strong quake also triggered several aftershocks and led authorities to issue a tsunami warning, which was later withdrawn.
The earthquake struck at around 4.58 am at a depth of 15 kilometres, according to Indonesia’s geophysics agency, BMKG. Small tsunami waves of less than one metre were recorded in several areas.

Videos and photos from the affected areas showed widespread panic and damage. A verified video from Maumere in eastern Indonesia showed parts of a building collapsing as people screamed and ran for safety.
Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity because it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several major tectonic plates meet.
