PTC Web Desk:  Apple has a new chief executive. John Ternus has taken charge as the company’s CEO, succeeding Tim Cook after his 15-year tenure at the top.

John Ternus, 51, has spent 25 years at Apple and is best known for leading the company’s hardware engineering teams. His appointment comes at a crucial time as Apple looks to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence while dealing with supply-chain and geopolitical challenges.

John Ternus joined Apple in 2001

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 after working as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. He later moved through several leadership roles before becoming senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021.

Under his leadership, teams worked across major Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.

Tim Cook moves to executive chairman role

Cook is not leaving Apple completely. He has moved to the position of executive chairman of the company’s board.

During his time as CEO, Cook became closely associated with Apple’s global supply chain and its ability to manage manufacturing across different countries. Ternus will now have to take on a much broader role, including dealing with political and international issues.

Apple has gradually increased production outside China, including iPhone assembly in India and other manufacturing operations in Vietnam. However, China remains an important part of the company’s manufacturing network and consumer market.

AI becomes a major challenge

One of Ternus’ biggest challenges will be artificial intelligence. Apple has faced increasing pressure to show that it can compete with technology companies that have made major advances in AI.

Analysts had also suggested that software chief Craig Federighi could have been a strong choice for the CEO position because of Apple’s AI challenges. However, Ternus’ supporters point to the continued importance of hardware in the way consumers adopt new technology.

The new CEO will therefore have to balance Apple’s strong hardware business with the need to make greater progress in AI.

Ternus’ attention to detail

One story from Ternus’ early Apple career highlights his approach to engineering.

In 2001, while visiting a supplier facility, Ternus noticed that screws intended for the Apple Cinema HD Display had 35 grooves instead of the 25 specified by Apple. He challenged the supplier, and the design was eventually changed to meet Apple’s specification. The episode has become an example of his focus on small details and product quality.

Apple Silicon was a major milestone

Ternus also played an important role during Apple’s transition from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon chips for Mac computers. The transition began in 2020 and was completed across the Mac lineup within the company’s planned timeline. The move gave Apple greater control over the performance and power efficiency of its computers.
