The arrest of the veteran police officer, who was known for his work with young people, has caused concern among the Punjabi community in British Columbia.
PTC News Desk: Kalwinder Singh, popularly known as Kal Dosanjh, a Punjabi-origin Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officer and youth charity founder, has been arrested after a long undercover investigation into alleged fraud, theft and breach of trust.
The arrest of the veteran police officer, who was known for his work with young people, has caused concern among the Punjabi community in British Columbia.
According to the BC Prosecution Service, the 50-year-old officer faces nine criminal charges related to alleged offences committed between December 8, 2017, and July 25, 2025, in Vancouver, Surrey and other parts of British Columbia.
WHO IS KALWINDER 'KAL' DOSANJH?
Dosanjh has worked with the Vancouver Police Department for nearly 25 years. According to reports, he also served as a senior detective in the VPD's Financial Crimes Unit.
He spent several years working in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside before becoming well known for his community work and programmes focused on young people.
Dosanjh is originally from a village near Phagwara in Punjab and lives in Surrey, British Columbia. Police reportedly arrested him near 129 Street and 59 Avenue.
What are the allegations ?
According to reports on the investigation, Dosanjh allegedly used his position as a police officer and his reputation in the community to attract investors by promising them high returns through real-estate investments.
He is alleged to have collected around C$25 million from hundreds of investors.
The allegations state that some properties were bought with cash. Investors were reportedly told that these properties would later be sold at higher prices and that the profits would be shared among them.
Investigators further allege that some of the properties were later mortgaged to banks, with the money being used to buy additional properties. Some of these assets were allegedly worth around C$20 million and were held in Dosanjh's name.
As the real-estate market weakened, some mortgaged properties were reportedly foreclosed. This allegedly left investors facing major losses, while Dosanjh was unable to repay the money.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
