Pakistan man, son behind deadly Bondi Beach carnage that killed 15
The 50-year-old father was shot dead by police at the scene, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, was taken to hospital in critical condition and remains under police guard.
PTC News Desk: Two people responsible for the deadly shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach were a father and his son from Pakistan, according to CBS News citing US intelligence officials.
The 50-year-old father was shot dead by police at the scene, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, was taken to hospital in critical condition and remains under police guard. Authorities confirmed there were no other attackers and have classified the incident as a terrorist attack targeting Sydney’s Jewish community.
The shooting occurred on Sunday evening during “Chanukah by the Sea,” a crowded public Hanukkah event. Gunfire caused panic as people fled the beach and nearby streets. Police later confirmed that 16 people were killed at the scene, including one of the attackers, and that the second suspect was arrested.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said on Monday that the investigation had made significant progress and that officers were no longer looking for additional suspects. He also confirmed that two improvised explosive devices were found near the site and were safely defused by specialist teams.
Police carried out overnight search warrants at properties in Bonnyrigg and Campsie in western Sydney. Lanyon said the deceased attacker was a licensed firearms owner with six registered weapons, which are believed to have been used in the attack. Authorities are now investigating how the firearms were accessed and used.
While the father’s identity has not been released, police confirmed the son’s name as Naveed Akram.
