Trump invokes Indian electoral system for 'Save America Act' passage, calls for voter ID cards

PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump on Monday renewed his demand for the passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, referring to India’s election system and voter identification rules.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump cited India’s large-scale election process and said that during the country’s last general election, around 646 million people voted. He claimed that less than 1% of voters used postal ballots and that every voter was required to have a valid photo identity document.

"Earlier this month, India's Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration -- How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID?" Trump said.

Trump again urged the US Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which aims to ensure that only US citizens can vote in federal elections.

According to the White House, the proposed law would require people to provide valid identification and proof of US citizenship while registering to vote in federal elections. It would also require states to remove non-citizens from voter lists.

The legislation further proposes limiting mail-in voting to specific situations, such as illness, disability, military service or travel.

The administration also compared US election procedures with those in other countries, arguing that America lags behind other nations in enforcing what it described as basic election protections.

"India and Brazil tie voter ID to a biometric database, while the United States largely relies on self-attestation for citizenship," the White House said.

The Bill to pass the law was introduced on January 29.
